VOID Detection

A void is the space in between floors, ceilings and walls. Whether these floors are raised or ceilings suspended does not make a difference. There is a common mistake regarding voids less than 800mm that they do not require Automatic Smoke Detection (ASD), they do. The act specified that only unless smoke can’t penetrate any other area, the void is less than 800mm and regular risk assessments are carried out, then you may go without.

CO / HEAT / SMOKE OR MULTI DETECTORS?

Choosing the right form of fire detection

To achieve a fast response to a fire the correct and most appropriate detector should be in use and correctly installed. Many options are available and manufacturers now produce devices with integral CO carbon monoxide sensors, which can detect smouldering fires.

CATEGORY L1, L2 OR L3

Which fire design category am I?

Each fire system is designed to be secure for a certain category standard depending on your requirements and risks identified through RRO and risk assessments as well as industry specific needs. For example, buildings with high occupancy such as stadia, leisure centres and hotels will require better coverage than perhaps a small convenience store.

Common misconceptions include:
  • L1, L3 and L4 are terms used referring to the location of the detection
  • L5 and L2 categories are both subject to site specific consideration in relation to location, type of detection and risk
  • No category should be designed without appropriate consultation
